11days – 10 nights Summer Adventure

Photo / Photo Workshop tour

Road Map

11 days summer vacation combined with forgotten places, adventure and Photo / photo workshop for landscape lovers lead by the native Icelandic photographer: Rafn Sig,-.

“I will get you to the right spots  for the best photographic and adventure results”.

We go from mid-June, July, August, September and October (depends on the weather) on this trip as it is one of the best time of the year in Iceland. Endless soft light with late sunset and early sunrises are amongst the unique features that make Westfjords the most magical place for photographers and landscape lovers We will explore big Puffins cliffs, drink from unique springs, bath in natural hot springs, visit big waterfalls, cross high mountains and go to hidden spots

You will be picked up and dropped off at the Airport. We will be staying at farmhouses and motels which is the classic Icelandic way to travel, and helps visitors feel more in tune with Iceland’s cultural traditions. Farm stay is simply a guesthouse in farm surroundings; expect comforts to be on par with those of a European bed-and-breakfast. We do this to reach some of the amazing locations of the Westfjords.

Day 1:

Picked up at Keflavik Int’l Airport.
The rest of the day/night is free.

Day 2

Early start at 08:00.
We start our adventure driving through the tunnel of Hvalfjörður, through the main town of west Iceland Borgarnes witch is is the center of commerce for a large part of western Iceland

Rafn_Sig--
From Borgarnes we head west onto the beautiful multi-colored terrain of the Snæfellsnes peninsula.

Glacier with red sand beach in front on a sunny dayThe Snæfellsnes is a peninsula situated to the west of Borgarfjörður, in western Iceland.
It has been named Iceland in Miniature, because many national sights can be found in the area,[citation needed] including the Snæfellsjökull volcano, regarded as one of the symbols of Iceland. With its height of 1446 m, it is the highest mountain on the peninsula and has a glacier at its peak. (Jökull” means “glacier” in Icelandic). The volcano can be seen on clear days from Reykjavík, a distance of about 120 km. The mountain is also known as the setting of the novel Journey to the Center of the Earth by the French author Jules Verne. The area surrounding Snæfellsjökull has been designated one of the four National Parks by the government of Iceland .

A quick stop at the small hamlet of Búðir, meaning “shops.” And Rauðarfellsgjá – this area was made famous by Jules Verne’s novel “A Journey to the Centre of the Earth” in which the entrance to the centre of the earth is from a passage into the mountain.
Next we will drive towards the glacier and visit the cave Sönghellir: Sönghellir (“Singing cave”), known for its echoes. The story says that one of the Icelandic settlers, Bárður Snæfellsás, is believed to have lived in the cave Sönghellir when he first arrived to Iceland with his people. The name Sönghellir literally means a cave for singing and was given the name because of its echo.
Arnarstapi or Stapi is a small fishing village at the foot of Mt. Stapafell between Hellnar village and Breiðavík farms on the southern side of Snæfellsnes, Iceland.
We will hedd downt  to the small willage Arnarstapi where we can see the statue of Bárður and from there you will walk along the coast line and see the beautiful sea cliffs and views in this area and end up in a coffeehouse at Hellnar.

From Hellnar we will stop at various places like Lónsdrangar – Djúpalónssandur – Volcano Saxhóll where I will invite you to walk up to see the crater – The small towns of Hellisandur – Rif and Ólafsvík.

We will drive along the coastline until we reach the mountain Kirkjufell and find us some accommodation there nearby.

Day 3

Day 3 Road Map

After a good breakfast we drive along the coastline of Snæfellsnes through some spectacular landscape of Volcanos and heed to the Westfjords region, the forgotten part of Iceland.

BakkadalurWestfjords are attached to the mainland by a narrow isthmus of land barely 10km wide.  WestFjords are one of the most breathtakingly beautiful and least-visited corners of Iceland – only three percent of all foreign tourists make it out here. Everything here is extreme – from the mountains that dominate the landscape, plunging precipitously into the Atlantic, to the ferocious storms that have gnawed the coastline into countless craggy inlets. Life up here, on the edge of the Arctic Circle, is tough – even in summer, temperatures seldom rise above 10°C, and drifting pack ice is never far from the north coast.
We will pass the city Búðardalur and cross the bridge over Gilsfjörður where it all starts

On our way to the destination we will drive through unforgettable landscape like fjords, high mountains clear rivers and unique landscape. When we reach our destination Flókalundur we will relax in a natural hot bath and explore the nearest surroundings.

Day 4

Day 4 Road Map

Rafn_Sig--0718After a good breakfast we start our journey to the westernmost point of Iceland, Látrabjarg (and Europe if Greenland and the Azores are not counted). Before we reach Látrabjarg we will stop at Rauðisandur. Rauðisandur, or (Red Sand), is precisely that: a beach with red sand. Endless red sand. Well, not endless, but 10 km is a lot. The magnificent hues of the sand differ with daylight and weather, and the beach is the biggest pearl in a string of coves with sand ranging in colors from white through yellow through red to black, and in coarseness from very fine to sole-hurting chips of seashells.

What to do in Rauðisandur? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. There’s just pure sand and unique tranquility. You might want to step out of the car, get the camera out and start walking. Forget everything. Except maybe getting the perfect shot of the ever-changing hues of yellow, orange and red.

Rauðisandur, or (Red Sand), is precisely that: a beach with red

Arnarfjörður From Rauðisandur we go to Látrabjarg. The cliffs of all cliffs, Látrabjarg, are home to birds in unfathomable numbers. It hosts millions of birds and is vital for their survival as it hosts up to 40% of the world population for some species as the Razorbill. It is Europe’s largest bird cliff. Guillemots and other cliff birds number either in tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands or in the millions. The birds are fearless, and provide stunning photographic opportunities from close range. The puffins are particularly tame and are the ones frequenting the grassy, higher part of the cliffs. But look out, the edges are fragile and loose and the fall is high.

Hot natural pot at Reykjafjörður in WestfjordsAfter a good stop at Látrabjarg we start our way home through beautiful places like the small town of Patreksfjörður and Bíldudalur. We will stop at another natural hot pot near the beach and think of what we have accomplished that day.

Day 5

Day 5 Road Map

Rafn_Sig--1
We will have an early start because this is a day of adventures. After a drive over the mountains we will reach our first destination spot Dynjandi Waterfalls.

Rafn_Sig--1891-2

Dynjandi is truly one of Westfjords wonders, at 100 meters height. It spreads its 30 meter wings and 60 meters at its lowest point. Dynjandi is in fact a series of multiple waterfalls with each “subtier” entitled by the following names: Bæjarfoss, Hundafoss, Hrísvaðsfoss, Göngumannafoss, Strompgljúfrafoss, and Hæstafjallafoss.

Man watching waterfall

From there we will stop at Hrafnseyri. Hrafnseyri: a simple farm famous around Iceland as the birthplace of Jón Sigurðsson, one of the fathers of the country’s independence.
Today the farm has been converted into a museum celebrating the great man’s life
From Hrafnseyri we will head to our sleeping facilities and if we are lucky I will take you a surprise way only possible under certain conditions. It’s one of my surprise places.
Hrafnseyri on the northern shores of the Arnarfiord Bay.

Day 6

Day 6 Road Map

Day 7

Day 7 Road Map

We will have a long day of driving through breathtaking fjords and mountains to our destination. We will stop frequently to watch the view, shoot pictures and enjoy the magnificent landscape with its high mountains, deep walleyes, fresh water and clear air. When we reach our destination we will swim in a natural hot Spa and enjoy life

Day 8

Day 8 Road map

Our journey this day will be to Norðurfjörður in the north, the lonely 220km of the Strandir coast form the West Fjords’ easternmost extremities and one of the least-visited corners of Iceland.
The land is rugged, with snowcapped mountains and deeply indented fjords, the setting for some of the country’s most isolated communities, dependent on fishing and sheep farming for their existence. The only thoroughfare, the 80km Route 643, is always in poor condition, prone to landslips and impassable from autumn’s first snows until road maintenance crews break through again in late spring. There’s no public transport, but it’s worth making every effort to drive this earth road to really experience the wild and pioneering spirit of Iceland, notably at Djúpavík, a former herring-fishing village that’s now all but abandoned, and is home to one of the West Fjords’ most welcoming hotels

Day 9

Day 9 Road Map

This is the day when we start to find our way back home. We are still driving through the beautiful Westfjords and we will stop where we want to stop. On our way we will see the landscape we have been driving through but at a certain point it will change. We will start seeing big river called Nroðurá (The river to the North), Volcanos and different landscape. Our main stop will be at a big waterfall called Glanni

Day 10 Road Map

Day 10

Lavafalls in BorgarfjordToday is our last day “On the Road”. It will leed us to beautiful waterfalls called Hraunfossar and Barnafossar.  Hraunfossar (Borgarfjörður, western Iceland) is a series of waterfalls formed by rivulets streaming over a distance of about 900 metres out of the Hallmundarhraun, a lava field which flowed from an eruption of one of the volcanoes lying under the glacier Langjökull. The waterfalls pour into the Hvítá river from ledges of less porous rock in the lava. The name hraun comes from the Icelandic word for lava. Literally a stone’s throw upstream from Hraunfossar, there is another waterfall called Barnafoss. Its name, the waterfall of the children, comes from an accident which is said to have taken place here in former times. There was a natural bridge over the waterfall and two children from a nearby farm fell to their deaths crossing the river on the bridge. Afterwards, the grief-struck mother had the bridge destroyed.
From there we will find other beautiful locations as we head home to your Accommodation with lot of other interesting places
