4 days Highland summer vacation combined with forgotten places, adventure and/or Photo / photo workshop for landscape lovers lead by the native Icelandic photographer: Rafn Sig,-.
“I´ts the best of the Highlands that Iceland can offer”.
We go from end of June, July, August and September (depends on the weather and road conditions) on this trip as it is one of the best time of the year in Iceland. Endless soft light with late sunset and early sunrises are among the unique features that make the Highlands the most magical place for photographers and landscape lovers We will explore colorful mountains, bath in natural hot springs, visit big waterfalls, cross high mountains and go to hidden spots
You will be picked up and dropped off at your hotel. We will be staying at farmhouses and motels which is the classic Icelandic way to travel, and helps visitors feel more in tune with Iceland’s cultural traditions. Farm stay is simply a guesthouse in farm surroundings; expect comforts to be on par with those of a European bed-and-breakfast.
You should witness it for yourself so you know what we are talking about .
We continue our travel to visit some of Iceland’s most stunning sights, starting with the Geysir geothermal area where the Strokkur geyser shoots a column of water up to 30 metres (98 ft.) into the air every 4-8 minutes in a thrilling display of nature’s forces. The visit continues with Gullfoss (Golden Falls) waterfall, created by the river Hvítá, which tumbles and plunges into a crevice some 32 m (105 ft.) deep.
We continue our tour be stopping at some beautiful waterfalls like Faxi and Hjálparfoss until we get to Gjáin.
Gjáin is a small valley with waterfalls, ponds, and volcanic structures. It is situated in the south of Iceland. It is to be found at about half an hour walking distance from the historical farm Þjóðveldisbærinn Stöng.
From Gjáin we will go to the highlands and fin our second highest waterfall Háifoss (122 m) and his Neighbor (that’s the name of the waterfall) , situated in a narrow canyon near Hekla Volcano
From there we will go to our sleeping facilities
Early morning breakfast and off we go to Landmannalaugar
This unique part of the highlands is one of Iceland’s most awe-inspiring places. Among its main characteristics are the colourful rhyolite mountains with their varying textures, shapes and sizes, and the wonderful natural hot springs, perfect for soaking in after a day of hiking.
We will spend most of the day at Landmannalaugar before drive through open rivers narrow canyons, high mountains and with some stops at beautiful places through Fjallabaksleið Nyrðri to our sleeping facilities.
We will head back up to the highlands with a stop at Fjárðárgljúfur canyon, a 100m deep and 2 km long and waterfall Fagrifoss. Fagrifoss is waterfall situated near the Lakagígar region. Access to the waterfall requires the crossing of a river ford, for which a big 4x4 vehicle is needed . From there we will enter the region of Lakagígar.
Laki or Lakagígar (Craters of Laki) is a volcanic fissure, not far from the canyon of Eldgjá and the small village of Kirkjubæjarklaustur. Lakagígar is the correct name, as Laki mountain itself did not erupt, as fissures opened up on each side of it. Lakagígar is part of a volcanic system centered on the Grímsvötn volcano and including the Þórðarhyrna volcano. It lies between the glaciers of Mýrdalsjökull and Vatnajökull, in an area of fissures that run in a southwest to northeast direction.
The system erupted over an eight-month period between 1783 and 1784 from the Laki fissure and the adjoining Grímsvötn volcano, pouring out an estimated 14 km3 (3.4 cu mi) of basalt lava and clouds of poisonous hydrofluoric acid and sulfur dioxide compounds that killed over 50% of Iceland’s livestock population, leading to a famine which then killed approximately 25% of the island’s human population.
The Laki eruption and its aftermath caused a drop in global temperatures, as sulfur dioxide was spewed into the Northern Hemisphere. This caused crop failures in Europe and may have caused droughts in India. The eruption has been estimated to have killed over six million people globally, making it the deadliest in historical times.
After a good day at Lakagígar we head down from the Highlands to our sleeping location
The South coast will be our goal today. We start by going to the willage Vík, Reynisdrangar, Dyrhólaey and the icefall at Sólheimajökull, where you can take a hike up to the glacier. We will continue to the powerful Skógarfoss waterfall.
From Skógarfoss waterfall we come to another unique waterfall named Seljalandsfoss, about 30 km west from Skógar. It is 60 meters high with a foot path behind it at the bottom of the cliff, but with a thin cascade. It is the only known waterfall of its kind, where it is possible to walk behind it.
And now it’s time to go home
After a great four day trip we head back to Reykjavík with our cameras full of beautiful photos and our mind filled with cool memories.
If you want to stop on the way to take pictures.
Then we stop with a smile.
